What is the School Counselor’s Role?
Dr. Gwen’s Meet The Counselor Toolbox is a great way to introduce yourself to students. It helps students and parents better understand the role of the school counselor. It is a positive, fun, interactive way to help all students get to know you as the counselor. The toolbox is filled with tangible visuals. Visuals help students make connections about the role of the counselor and serves as a memory aid. This introduction is a good start to building a trusting relationship with students. We do not want our first meeting with a student to be in the middle of a crisis. It is hard to recover from a bad first impression.

Counselors nurture, protect, and help modify behavior so that students can have a successful year both academically and socially. We try very hard at the beginning of the year to make it clear that students are never “in trouble” if they get called to the counselors’ office. We aid in solving problems and help students become the best version of themselves. When students visit the counselors office, we want them to feel unconditional positive regard. This becomes critical when students need an advocate in the school that they know and trust. Having an advocate is beneficial if students are struggling academically or socially. It is especially important if they are self harming or having negative thought processes.
